Thursday Feedback

So we've had our latest meeting in regards to the group project, and it was really quite encouraging.  We'd banded together to have plenty to show for it, with screenshots of assets, latest concepts and a level playthrough (all viewable in the previous blog).  We also very quickly came to some conclusions -

  • the abundance of striped buildings made everything feel a bit candyland-ish.  Although this was a common feature, we decided to include some plain panels in our modulars for variety.
  • the scale was huge.  Although we followed the map our blockout was much larger than expected, so for putting the assets in everything had to be scaled back, or there would be something akin to a football field to fill in each open space.
  • the cramped street was a bit too straight and boring, and needed twisting up since it was possible to see from end to end.  After our trip to the Shambles in York we knew this definitely wouldn't be the case.
  • we decided to get rid of the far right street that ran parallel to the aforementioned cramped one, since we already had Poultry Street as well.  Considering it was so far away from the 'hotspots' and did little to link different features together we decided to remove it in favour of spending more time on areas of interest.
  • there was some debate over where the tavern should be, considering it was to have an interior.  Initially in the level playthrough we put it Queenhithe (hythe? blythe?) but upon further thought we wanted that area to have a wealthier market feel to it, whilst Three Cranes to be more gritty with a grimier harbour area.  Considering we wanted to make that area feel rougher and we already had individual buildings such as the bookshop and poultry store in the Queenhithe space, we chose to move it to Three Cranes.
Some really important decisions were made in this meeting and it was beyond useful to have the level blocked out with the actual assets we were planning on using.  Because of that we all have a very clear idea of what we have to tackle next in regards to assets, and areas to improve on.  Overall, it was encouraging and although it's been a tiring week I feel we can tackle the coming challenges head on.
